Eyeglass cloths are everyday essentials, especially for anyone who wears glasses. Their main function is to clean and protect lenses, keeping them clear and extending coating life. But not all cloths are equal — here's what to look for.
What an eyeglass cloth actually does
A quality cloth does three things at once:
- Lifts oil & fingerprints — split microfiber traps skin oils in its fiber matrix instead of smearing them.
- Removes dust without scratching — millions of fine filaments sweep grit away from the lens surface.
- Protects the coating — soft, dense fiber (200+ GSM) avoids the micro-scratches that haze AR and blue-light coatings.
How to choose: 4 criteria
1. Material
Look for 80/20 or 85/15 polyester-polyamide split microfiber. Avoid “free” cloths that feel slippery — they're often polyester-only and just push oil around.
2. GSM (weight)
180–250 GSM is the sweet spot for eyeglasses. Lighter = cheaper but less effective; heavier = plush but bulkier for everyday carry.
3. Edge finish
Laser-cut or ultrasonic-sealed edges prevent fraying without adding a stitched seam that could scratch. Stitched edges are fine for larger cloths (18×18 cm+).
4. Weave
Suede (brushed) weave is the premium choice for coated lenses — softest and lowest friction. Plain weave is fine for general use and accepts fuller-color sublimation printing.
